Well, readers, after discussing the story earlier this week about the convicted sex offender who was ordained a minister in my hometown I didn't think there would be a worse bit of news out of Kentucky this week. Boy, I should stop thinking those things out loud.
A U.S. Census worker was found dead in Clay County Kentucky, hanged from a tree with the words "Fed" carved into his chest. W-O-W. The body was found on September 12, but the story is just now breaking for some reason--although it is notable (maybe) that I learned of this story not from our local rag (which I read everyday), or our local tv news (which I watch sporadically), but from the Huffington Post. That's like hearing the news about your crazy uncle screwing a horse (again) from your dentist.
Clay County is well outside the jurisdiction of my metropolitan oasis of Louisville Metro, but only about 80 miles South of an area in which I frequently camp and hike in the Daniel Boone National Forest--a bit too close for comfort, maybe. The area in and around the park is what I would call very Bible Belt rural: lots of pick up trucks, mullets, country music, and the type of lazy-eyed possum hunters you'd expect to see wearing some type of merchandise officially licensed by Larry the Cable Guy. Every time I visit the area I lose count of the number of Confederate flags and "Don't Tread on Me" tattoos I see. Living in Louisville--a fairly liberal, center-left-ish minded place--I tend to forget that the rest of my home state is filled with an ocean of seriously undereducated bat-shit crazy Fox News disciples. So with this mind-numbingly scary crime squarely in mind, I feel somewhat justified here in assuming that the magical tears of Glenn Beck had something to do with this.
