Hmm, it seems that nobody was really fooled into thinking that the honorary title of "aid-de-camp" came attached with any real duties/responsibilities. The above is a 19th century drawing titled A Lady and Her Aid-De-Camp. You'd think the simple fact that it's French would give the position some gravitas, but alas--in the 1800's as today, no respect for a man-secretary. Good thing we here in Kentucky had the good sense to call 'em Colonels instead. (By the way, Harlan Sanders, arguably the most famous Ky Colonel, never held an actual military rank nor did he get the honorary commission--it was all a ploy thought up by himself and Dave Thomas to sell chicken. He was made a legitimate Kentucky Colonel retroactively, after his chicken empire had made quite a lot of money. FYI.)
